Sealing
Cement-based grout is porous by nature, sanded or not, so oil, grease and water seep in and discolor it. A sealer is a barrier against those stains and against a dingy look.
Seal grout every year or so on floors and walls that do not see much moisture, and more often in the shower or on a bathroom backsplash. To change the color of your grout while you seal it, see grout repair and color sealing.

How often should grout be sealed?
We recommend cleaning and sealing at least once a year. Floors and walls that see little moisture can go about a year between seals; showers and bathroom backsplashes need it more often.
